The laboratory focuses upon the development and application of new neuroimaging and analysis methods to identify the areas of the brain underlying symptom formation in neuropsychiatric disorders, with a particular emphasis on examining abnormal interactions between mesolimbic and neocortical brain systems.  Drs. Silbersweig, Stern and their colleagues, often in collaboration with other clinical and basic neuroscience research groups, have used functional neuroimaging methods to investigate the neuropathophysiology of symptoms/phenomena in the following disorders or settings:

-schizophrenia (hallucinations, delusions)

-Tourette syndrome (tics)

-geriatric depression (memory dysfunction)

-bipolar disorder (mania)

-major depression (anhedonia/amotivation)

-borderline personality disorder (affective dysfunction/behavioral dyscontrol)

-*anxiety disorders (panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder)

-premenstrual dysphoric disorder

-anorexia nervosa

-gender differences in cognitive and emotional processing

*as part of the Center for Neural Systems of Fear and Anxiety, Primary Investigator Joseph LeDoux, Ph.D.
